Construction in the mountain

There are two theories about the origin of the name Montbau. The most reliable maintains that this name comes from the Catalan word mont (mountain) and the German word bau (construction), playing with Bauhaus, the denomination of the German artistic movement. According to the other theory, this name derives from a deformation of Gombau, the name of a tower that stood in La Horta district during the Middle Ages.

Farmers, monks, dealers and traders passed through this historical landmark of the 15th century, converting it in a summer residence. The first zoo of Barcelona was created in its beautiful gardens and it was finally sold becoming the today zoo of the city. This building is now a Salesian residence.
